Checking in with Supported Internships at Dorset County Hospital

This year, we have four interns on placement at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, completing Supported Internships in a variety of roles. The first half-term was spent being introduced to teams, identifying suitable roles, and completing inductions. All interns began work by mid-November, and we’re happy to share an update on their journeys so far.

Yasmine graduated from our Gillingham campus last summer and transitioned into a Supported Internship in September 2025. She has been working on Evershot Ward, where she supports patients by making drinks, delivering meals, and engaging in friendly conversations.

“I’m able to use my coffee-making skills from college in Gillingham here. I really enjoy giving patients their drinks and having chats with them. We talk about their life history and how they’re feeling. All the staff are amazing, and Mark is very helpful. If I have a problem, I know I can go to him to help get it sorted. I’d like to step out of my comfort zone more and become more independent. I’ve watched obs being done and hope to do them myself in future” – Yasmine, Intern

“It’s been lovely seeing Yasmine receive such positive feedback and make a real difference to people’s days. Over the next few weeks, Yasmine will be working more closely with the healthcare team, supporting patients, and taking part in walk-arounds with the Dementia Team. We’re excited to see how she continues to develop.” – Mark Pentland, Job Coach

Another intern, Asher, has been working in Damers Restaurant. Previously, Asher developed his front-of-house, kitchen and hospitality skills in The Dovecote Café and training kitchen at our Moreton campus, and he has transferred these skills into this new setting with brilliant enthusiasm. We’re delighted to see him bringing his bright personality to his Supported Internship placement.

“It’s going really well! I’ve been keeping the tables clean, serving customers, and making sure the fridges are stocked. I’m looking forward to using the till very soon!” – Asher, Intern

“Asher has built a really good rapport with the team, who enjoy working with him and are always pleased with his work. He has been increasing his independence with tasks, and we’re looking forward to giving him some new challenges over the coming weeks.”
– Mark Pentland, Job Coach

Asher’s dad also shared his thoughts on the internship:

“I must say that EMA’s Supported Internship programme has proved invaluable for my son. He has progressed enormously, beyond what many people thought might be possible. Thanks to everyone at EMA for supporting him – and for this initiative.”
– Mike, Asher’s Dad

Supported Internships are tailored to help young people make the most of their time on placement.

Elliott is another intern working in Damers Restaurant (on a different day to Asher). The team have expressed how grateful they are for his contribution and how impressed they are with his strong work ethic and initiative. We’re looking forward to Elliott continuing to progress, exploring other areas of the hospital, and developing his skillset over the coming weeks. Keep up the fantastic work, Elliott!

Last, but certainly not least, is Ryan. After an initial period with the Guest Relations Volunteering Team, it was identified that he was ready to move into a more challenging role – one that better matches his interests. This highlights the flexible nature of these placements and the fantastic collaboration with Tom Gordon and the wider team at Dorset County Hospital. Our interns are fully supported to ensure they gain the most from their experience, and we look forward to seeing how Ryan progresses in his new role.

We wish all the interns continued success in their placements, and will check in again with them soon.
