Today’s pop-up café for lunch at the Gillingham campus went down a storm, and EMA student Lillie stepped up for the food prep, cooking, and making a cake dessert with chocolate sauce – from scratch!
“Lillie gets involved with all the planning too – from choosing the menu, making the shopping list, and buying the ingridients. She works so hard, completing all the tasks given to her, from food prep, plating up, serving, cleaning, and washing up – she’s such an asset in the kitchen and today’s pop-up café was more proof of that.” – Natalie, Gillingham Tutor.
For support, Lillie uses visual aid recipes to help with her focus and stay on track. These resources are utilised by many of our students and are key in helping them with routines and to complete tasks such as the range involved with pop-up café.
“We smashed it today. Next time I want Natalie to really challenge me!” said Lillie, showing great confidence after plating up.
On the menu today were smash beef burgers, and sweet potato and bean burgers, home made skin-on chips, along with a sauce made by student Alfie. The food was very much enjoyed by fellow students and EMA staff!
Natalie added, “Pop up cafe has been a huge success this year, from practicing hospitality and barista skills to preparing and trying new foods. It promotes social interaction and communication with other students, staff and visitors, really allowing for so much to be done as part of the sessions, and the training kitchen continues to be a brilliant space to teach in.”
