The training kitchen at Moreton provides a professional space for our students at various levels to develop their cooking and hospitality skills. This past week, the Level 1 group baked York fingers and Eccles cakes using pastry they had made and frozen in a previous session. Knife skills, weighing ingredients, rolling and folding pastry, oven and hob use, good communication (assisting each other), and food hygiene are all key parts of a lesson like this.
“I’m so much more confident with the ovens now, and this kitchen is a big reason why. They can be intimidating with how they blast out heat, but I’ve learnt how to use them, along with many other things I wasn’t used to doing before. I really enjoy the hospitality lessons and look forward to them. I know it’s a big dream, but I’d love to open my own café one day.” – Jack, EMA student.
“The kitchen has been great for my independence. There’s lots of space, and everything is tidy and in its place. It’s all clearly organised, which makes cooking much easier. I really enjoy being in here.” – George, EMA student.
Tutor Claire added:
“We love a good baking session, and the progress with this group has been amazing. They also recently completed their first fully independent cook. Jack has come along so well—he followed the recipe and made all the decisions by himself. A successful lesson like that one week means they all come to the next session feeling even more confident and happy to get on with it. I also have to say, the speed at which they clear up now compared to when we first started using the space is quite something! They’re smashing it.”
