Building Confidence Through Communication: SALT at EMA

The Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) team at EMA is committed to creating a high-quality, responsive, and inclusive communication environment for all our students. We achieve this through a combination of small group therapy, classroom support, and targeted short-term interventions, taking a flexible approach to meet each individual’s needs.

Kate leads the SALT team at EMA and shared some insight on recent progress made with students.

“We understand the frustration that comes with struggling to communicate thoughts and feelings. Speech and language therapy supports our young people in finding their ‘voice’—whatever form that may take. Communication support is embedded throughout the day, both in learning and social situations.

Toby, a student at our Gillingham campus, often finds it challenging to express choices and preferences. Recently, with the help of symbols and choice mats, he has made brilliant progress and can now use short phrases like “Don’t like cucumber.” This is a significant step towards achieving his goals, greater independence and confidence.”

SALT sessions also include games that encourage social interaction and teamwork, helping students develop the skills needed to build and maintain friendships and working relationships. Additionally, we provide support with identifying, expressing, and managing emotions.

We have more stories to share from the SALT team soon, but for more info about the Gillingham campus, our study programmes, and how SALT supports students at EMA, you can download our prospectus or get in touch to arrange a chat, guided tour, or taster session.
